The perfect balance of untamed landscape and exquisite architecture.
The area of Glen Affric and Strathglass is often described as the most beautiful glen in Scotland and has been the backdrop to many major TV and film productions; whenever a picturesque Highland landscape is needed, this is where location managers come. 'The Woman in Cabin 10’, a Netflix production starring Keira Knightley, was shot here; ‘Valhalla Rising’ from director Nicolas Winding Refn put the area’s rugged landscapes to exhilarating use. In short, if your film or photography project requires something untamed, something uniquely atmospheric, this region of the Highlands must be considered.
As a backdrop, with extensive options for indoor and outdoor shoots, the castle is an ideal choice for advertising designer clothing, outdoor clothing and accessories, lifestyle brands, wedding brands, jewellery, tableware, sports cars, off-road vehicles, motorbikes, mountain bikes and more. With plenty of space for catering trucks and crew vehicles, access is easy. With accommodation in the castle itself, we have everything covered.
Erchless is a Highland castle that dates back to the 14th century. It sits just on the edge of the Strathglass Complex Designated Special Area for Conservation and shares many of its flora and fauna. Here, remnants of ancient Caledonian forests endure and every attempt is made to preserve and conserve them. It encompasses pristine marshlands and steppes, Alpine grasslands and a variety of woodlands making it especially rich in plant life but creating the perfect ground for some spectacular and rare animals.
Permanent snow in montane regions creates the right environment for ptarmigans. Bearberry bushes display their scarlet fruit. Golden eagles soar above Munros and Corbetts, their tell-tale call a warning to grouse and capercaillie on the moorland below. Kestrels and merlins hunt here, too, and, at the highest levels, mountain hare thrive. Red deer make this area home as well as venturing below into woodlands. Tall Scots pine, alder, willow and aspen woodlands are the perfect habitat for foxes, black grouse and pine marten. The red squirrel has become synonymous with the Highlands where they proliferate without threat from their larger grey cousins. Parkland that surrounds lochs and rivers is grazed by sheep and iconic Highland cattle. All of these environments change dramatically with the seasons and offer dynamic photographic opportunities whether still or for film-makers.
Erchless isn’t all about the outdoors, though. It is, after all, an architectural delight with its baronial-style turrets and oriole windows. A long drive sweeps down through Erchless Woods to parkland and lawned gardens, then behold the glorious site of a chalk-white castle nestled, secluded, below. With vast views to parkland, its Victorian wing is an ideal film setting. Wide wooden-clad hallways characterise the interior giving a feeling of immense space; the grand staircase also reflects this sense. A stone spiral staircase leads to upper floors, too. Enormous fireplaces in drawing and dining rooms speak to the castle’s grandeur while prize stag heads, trophies from a bygone era, hang on high walls and remind us of times past. Grand vistas meet the eye from every aspect.
In essence, Erchless Castle is an incredible location that lends itself perfectly to high quality brands and must be seen to be fully appreciated. Whether you’d like to explore the majestic landscape or use the castle as a location for a film, call us to arrange a visit and experience this singular location for yourself.
